Hyderabad startup finalist in global textile awards


Hyderabad: Marking their presence felt in the global space, Hyderabad startups are being recognised for their innovative work. One such startup – Broadcast Wearables – has been nominated in two categories for the Future Textile Awards.

Launched in 2014, the technical textiles award was the brainchild of World Textile Information which publishes international technical textiles magazine Future Textiles.

The Hyderabad-based startup has been nominated under two categories – Best Innovation: Clothing Textiles and Best Innovation: e-textiles. While the former category it competes with eight other nominees, in the latter it has only one contender. The award function will be held on November 7 in Netherlands and it will be its fourth edition.

Broadcast Wearables started by husband-wife duo Ayyappa Nagubandi and Mahalakshmi has a variety of garment-driven innovations to its credit. Starting from LED panel-enabled T-shirts to garments that track a person’s vitals, they have been at the forefront of product innovation since November 2015. It also has its own e-commerce website that sells garments for men, women and kids and it has also been working various other technology focused work in the textile field.

Future Textile Awards’ second and third editions were held in Milan and Frankfurt respectively. Each welcomed over 200 guests, including a host of leading companies and research institutes. The awards reflect a more specialist focus on the purely ‘textile’ areas of technical textiles. By honing in on specific application areas, it enables us to target the greatest points of interest across technical textiles – bringing you tailored industry insight to benefit your business, and better reflecting what lies ahead by enhanced coverage of the latest research and product developments.

Other than Broadcast Werables, the list also two Indian firm and individual – Welspun and Sujit Mehra respectively – being nominated under different categories. “Being nominated along with a known name like Welspun is a proud moment for us. We are awaiting a response from the organisers about the next step,” Nagubandi said.
